Ambassador Timothy L. Towell has devoted the last 30 years of his career with the U.S. State Department seeking to advance American interests in South America and Europe. Currently he serves as President of the Foreign Policy Group. Previously, Ambassador Timothy L. Towell was Peace Corps Director for Africa, after serving in a variety of diplomatic assignments that included postings in Spain, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Belgium, and Cuba.
Ambassador Timothy L. Towell has received numerous honors and awards during his career. He is the recipient of the U.S. State Department Superior Honor Award, and served as President of the Council of American Ambassadors. Ambassador Timothy L. Towell is a member of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, and sits on the Board of Directors of the AmCham Cuba Advisory Council. Ambassador Timothy L. Towell is U.S. State Department-certified in three languages: Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
His first diplomatic position began in 1963 as the U.S. Vice Consul in Valencia, Spain. After his assignment ended in 1965, Ambassador Timothy L. Towell stayed in Spain for an additional two years as Special Assistant to the Ambassador in Madrid. Ambassador Timothy L. Towell’s next post was a temporary assignment in Paraguay with the American Embassy there, followed by three assignments in Bolivia: the first with the U.S. Consul in Cochabamba, the next with USAID in La Paz, and finally as the Bolivian Desk Officer for the U.S. Department of State.
Following a series of shorter assignments with the U.S. Department of State, Ambassador Timothy L. Towell was appointed as the U.S. Deputy Chief of Protocol, a post he held for five years. In 1988, Ambassador Timothy L. Towell was appointed as Ambassador to Paraguay by President Ronald Reagan and continued in that role until 1991.
